The beautiful transformation from a barren landscape to a lush, green lawn can be incredibly satisfying. But what comes after the sod installation? What are the maintenance steps to ensure your new lawn remains healthy and vibrant? Our experienced team at Greener Land is here to offer some expert advice to keep your lawn looking its best.
One of the biggest reasons for sod failure is improper aftercare. Similar to any gardening or landscaping project, your new sod requires time, effort, and most importantly, understanding. Remember, sod is living, breathing vegetation that, if cared for properly, can flourish and become a stunning feature of your property.
The first week following your sod installation is critical for water management. The sod should be watered within 30 minutes of installation. In the following days, water the sod at least once a day, ensuring it stays moist but not soaked. The goal is to keep the top inch of soil moist. Keep in mind; overwatering can lead to sod death as much as underwatering.
Monitoring moisture is crucial during this adjustment period. By gently lifting a corner of the sod, you should see water soaking into the soil underneath. If the soil appears dry, increase the watering. If you find pools of water, cut back on watering to avoid waterlogging, which can suffocate the roots.
Most new sod will need its first mow about a week or two after installation. Be sure to not remove more than one-third of the grass' height during each mowing session. This helps to avoid putting too much stress on the new growth and promotes healthy root development.
To facilitate the rooting process, it's advisable to keep foot traffic to a minimum during the few weeks following your sod installation. Give the roots time to grow deep into the soil, ensuring stability and health. Constant traffic can lead to compaction, which is detrimental to root development.
Our experts at Greener Land recommend keeping off fertilizers for the first 60 days following sod installation. This gives the sod ample time to establish its roots without the risk of burning from the high nitrogen concentration of most fertilizers.
Look out for signs of disease, pests, or dehydration. Brown patches, wilting, and blight are signs of trouble. Early detection and appropriate action can save your new sod from potential ruin.
Once your sod has fully taken root, typically after two months, you can start to treat it as a mature lawn. You can now cut back on watering to 1-2 times a week and start a regular fertilization schedule.
Creating a lush, vibrant lawn is not a one-time job. It takes patience, knowledge, and consistent care.
